Follow the water channel carved into the cliff to a black rock amphitheatre where twenty-five springs thread down through ferns into a pool. Early beats the pilgrimage crowd.

Risco waterfall spur
The short branch trail to the day's second act: Risco falls dropping a hundred metres off the plateau lip in one white ribbon. Same channel, opposite drama.

Late lunch in Porto Moniz
Drive down the island's northwest corner for lunch above the lava pools — limpets sizzling in garlic butter, bolo do caco bread, and the Atlantic exploding on the rocks.

The volcanic rock pools are seawater topped up by waves — safe, strange and unforgettable. The old free pools by the aquarium are rougher and better.

Take the old coast road toward Seixal for the Bridal Veil falls dropping straight into the sea, black-sand beaches below, and poncha where you stop.
