Europe's biggest medieval square, best before the tour groups land. Stand near St Mary's at the top of the hour for the bugle call that cuts off mid-note — as it has for 600 years.

Veit Stoss's 13-metre carved altar opens at 11:50 with a small ceremony — time your visit around it. The blue starred ceiling alone is worth the separate tourist entrance.

Browse the amber stalls in the Sukiennice arcades, then drop beneath the square: the Rynek Underground shows the medieval market layers found under your feet.
