The gabled quay glows best in morning light with nobody in shot. Hans Christian Andersen lived at No. 20, 67 and 18 — the man knew a good address.

The hour-long canal loop is the city's best orientation: the Opera, the Black Diamond library, Christianshavn's houseboats and the Little Mermaid without the bus-park scrum.

Christian IV's pleasure palace holds the crown jewels in the basement and 400 years of royal clutter above. The garden outside is where the city sunbathes.

Ride the spiral ramp — built wide enough for a horse and carriage — to the observatory platform, then drift down Strøget's side streets where the actual good shops hide.
