Two days linking the five villages on foot and by rail — the high Monterosso–Vernazza–Corniglia legs first, then the southern pair with a sunset over Manarola's harbour.

The biggest of the five, with the only real beach. Coffee and focaccia in the old town before the day-trippers' trains start landing — buy the Cinque Terre Card here.

Sentiero Azzurro: Monterosso to Vernazza
The trail's toughest and best leg: 500 steps up through lemon terraces, then a cliff path with the sea a hundred metres below. First sight of Vernazza's tower is the trip's postcard.

Vernazza harbour and castle
The prettiest square metre in Liguria: pastel houses around a boat-filled piazza. Climb Doria Castle's tower for the view back along the cliff you just walked.

Lunch on the Vernazza waterfront
Anchovies three ways — fried, marinated, salted — with the catch landed on the slip you're sitting beside. Trofie al pesto is the other non-negotiable.

Vernazza to Corniglia leg
Gentler than the morning: olive groves, dry-stone walls and the five villages' only hilltop member growing slowly ahead. The vineyard monorails you'll pass are real and in use.

Corniglia terraces and gelato
A hundred metres above the sea with no harbour at all — the quiet one. Alberto's basil gelato on the main lane, then the Santa Maria terrace for the full coastline south.

Four minutes of tunnel undo five hours of walking. Dinner in the old town — Miky for the lemon-leaf-baked catch if celebrating, Il Frantoio's focaccia if not.
